"Think twice before buying this tv" 2010-03-23
By onefinemother (Mears, MI)
I paid over $133 for this tv last month from Amazon. I was extremely disappointed in the audio and picture quality (and I'm not very fussy). I would think seriously before I purchased this tv unless it is for a child's room or occasional tv. It might be worth $99 in those applications, but I took it off my kitchen counter it was so irratating!!

 "Decent for the Price" 2010-03-02
By L. Martin (Los Angeles, CA)
The TV is good for the low price. It is not fancy in any way and does not really give you the clearest HD. (I am not really sure that it gets HD from my cable box at all?) Also, I cannot get my cable universal remote to sync with it. But otherwise, it does the job for the low cost.

 "Viore LC19VH54PB LCD TV." 2010-02-25
By Viking one (IL. USA)
The picture on this television lacks fine detail, no matter how you adjust the various brightness, contrast, colour, sharpness controls. As a occasional use TV I will keep this item, but I would look at Philips, Sanyo etc before spending your cash.

 "Great 19" TV" 2010-02-24
By Max30 (Lakemont, WA)
I am really happy with this TV. It looks great, the picture is very clean, and the sound is adequate. I was a little skeptical but after receiving the unit and hooking the TV up I am more than satisfied with my purchase. This is my first TV from VIORE but the price was very compelling and I noticed that they had pretty good reviews on their other TVS on Amazon. Great buy and I would recommend this TV to other people.

"Replace my 24 inch Ibook" 2010-03-21
    By Dallas R. McAfee (Oceanside,CA)
Since I got this netbook I take it everywhere with me. It does everything that you need-email, internet browse and other things. I use it for book reading instead of my Kindle. It is light weight and I can read while in bed with it. I absolutely recommend this netbook for anyone.
Perfect product-I have had it for several weeks now and have had no problems. Try it-you will love it.

"This is my 2nd ASUS Eee netbook and let me say that I am really plEeeased!" 2010-03-19
By Timothy B. Riley (San Antonio, TX USA)
I have several computers (as I think many people do now) and I wanted a little netbook for long plane flights and for just around town. I bought my first one in June of 2009 (a PC 1000HE) and really enjoyed it. Everyone that I showed it to wanted it. This happened so often that I eventually gave it to one of my sons who's Apple notebook had just suffered a horrible death (it was drowned by a glass of beer).

Several months went by and when my primary notebook computer suffered a similar fate (we are Irish after all) I decided that it was time for me to get another netbook. I was happy with my old ASUS Eee so I saw no reason to switch to another brand. This is a great little computer! As a matter of fact I am using it right now. Here are a few of my non-technical observations:

    * Many people are worried about the small keyboard but I wear XL gloves and have had no problem getting used to the 85% sized board

    * I bought the ASUS USB 2.0 8x DVD Writer External Optical Drive (SDRW-08D1S-U) for this one and am very glad that I did. I had to download a different media player so that I could watch DVDs on it but once I did I was able to watch DVDs on a plane with little bulk

    * I have downloaded some of my favorite video editing software programs and they run just fine on the ASUS

    * If I don't get upgraded to First Class on a flight I usually don't get enough room to use a regular sized notebook computer. This one is the perfect size for when you have to fly coach.

O-K, this is not a full-featured or full-powered laptop. However, it's really small and it's less than 400 bucks including the drive and a case! If you are looking for just one computer to do everything you might want to look elsewhere, but for what this was designed for it is great.

"Little netbook for good price!" 2010-03-17
    By MRH
PROS: It is a great little netbook that is the perfect size for my midwifery clinical. I put all my reference Skyscape apps on here, fits in my shoulder bag, easy to travel with, plays my online Netflix movies, I can load both the Nook and Amazon kindle on here so I can read my e-books. I have the option to buy e-books from either place without having to buy an additional specific e-reader. I also loaded the Mobipocket reader and PDF e-book reader. Reading the screen is not bad on my eyes. The battery does last a long time. I also have ITunes installed and I do not have any problems updating my ITouch. I also can download audiobooks and e-books from my public library without any problems. I can open several window at one without any problems. The internet wi-fi connection is good and I have also used direct internet connect when available. To avoid the problem of the sensitive touch pad I turn it off and use a wireless mouse. I have the Logitech wireless mouse that has the tiny receiver that sticks out by about 1/2 from the side of the computer. It does have bluetooth but that tends to drain the battery quickly. This is not my main computer and I do all my school work on my desk top computer due to speed and access to DVD drives. I do use the netbooks when I don't want to sit at my desk and want to access FB and my e-mail account. Skype works great if you have it plugged in, you image is grainy when running off the battery.

Cons: Windows 7 Starter does not come with the plug in to watch DVDs when you connect a DVD player to it. You have to upgrade to at least Windows Home ED which is an additional $80. It does recognize data files the DVD player and play the CD just not the movies. I installed a trail copy of CyberLink PowerDVD 9 and it worked fine. Also it only comes with 1g of memory and it pays to get the 2 g memory card, but it is easy to install since there is easy access to where it goes at the bottom of the netbook. The sound output to external speakers is funky. I am having problems with an "Echo" when I connect to external speakers. I tried adjusting but not having luck with that. I do not get that echo with headphones.
Overall: It is a great little supplemental machine to a larger laptop or desktop. It does fill the bill for what I wanted for using at my clinical. It is small enough to cart around without weighing a ton and large enough to have a decent size keyboard and monitor for my basic needs.

"5 Star Performance, but 4 Star Rating due to Lack of User Upgrade Options" 2010-03-10
    By A reader (Berkeley, CA)
    3/18/10 Edit:

This 1001p with the 250gb hard drive just got an "Editor's Choice" award from the Anandtech technology review blog - you can read the review here by substituting the usual . for DOT:

    [...]

Anandtech echoes my concern that it is tough to upgrade anything on this Asus 1001p beyond memory (which is ridiculously easy to do), but they like everything else so much that I have upgraded my original review by one star (4 star to 5 star). Lest you think I am slavishly following Anantech's reviewer's lead, please note that Anandtech had the technical resources to check performance of the LCD monitor screen and run a host of benchmarks and the LCD screen performance simply blows away everything else out there while the benchmarks are mostly BETTER than the more expensive ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1005PE-MU17-BK 10.1-Inch Black Netbook (Up to 11 Hours of Battery Life) - the contrast ratio on the 1001p LCD panel is superb (and it's the preferred matte finish). The one caveat is that their reviewer believes ASUS artificially throttles back the maximum screen brightness to save battery life - something I agree with. (There used to be a utility program to "uncork" the screen brightness on Asus netbooks, so at some point we may be able to regain the brightness.) I haven't had any problem with the current factory brightness level in a brightly lighted office, however.

Anandtech also praises the rigidity and quality of the construction of this Asus 1001p.

GIVEN THE DIFFICULTY IN UPGRADING THE HARD DRIVE on this Asus 1001p, be sure to order THIS ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1001P-PU17-BK 10.1-Inch Black Netbook (Up to 11 Hours of Battery Life) version with the 250 gb hard drive if you have a large music and/or video collection you want to haul around with you (the bargain priced 160 gb edition is plenty for almost all other purposes, however, if you are on a tight budget, and keep in mind it's not impossible to upgrade the hard drive, just harder than on some other netbooks like HP and Acer).

IF 48OP FULL-SCREEN HULU PLAYBACK IS IMPORTANT TO YOU, wait a few months more for some Asus edition with a Broadcom Crystal HD video accelerator card or, better yet, with an Nvidia Ion 2 gpu (graphics chip processor) which should also have an HDMI out (this one doesn't) if you want to try driving your HDTV via a netbook.

The edition under review WILL play Hulu "in browser screen" at 360p resolution, which may be enough while you are on the road, and WILL play even 720p for DVD's you convert (via Handbrake and VLC, or in some cases via Windows Media Player or Quicktime). Also please note that Google and Apple are both pushing hard for HTML5 to be accepted as an alternative streaming video player to Flash, and I have, in fact, been able to run YouTube videos 480p fullscreen on this Asus by opting into the HTML5 beta test program at yahoo (youtubeDOTcom/html5).

    Original review:

In some ways I like this netbook better than the HP Mini 210 which is my favorite, but the HP Mini 210 (and also the Acer ao532h) are much easier to upgrade.

Before you take this one star downgrade as a negative sufficient to scratch this netbook off your shopping list, PLEASE NOTE that a MEMORY upgrade is VERY simple since there IS a two-screw panel giving easy access to the 800 mhz memory module (you must use 800 mhz memory for an upgrade even though theoretically the N450 Atom processor in this and similar netbooks is supposed to run on 667 mhz memory - if you drop in 667 mhz memory it either won't run or you'll have buggy behavior - read one of the other reviews). This machine MAY require the 800 mhz memory to run in Super High Performance Mode accessible via Fn+spacebar, but I have not been able to confirm, details are hard to come by.

The overall performance, build, and quality of this netbook, are 5 star otherwise - the screen is sharp, glare free, has good contrast (Asus sometimes has the best contrast), and displays websites and videos with high quality. The keyboard is easy to use, but it requires a simultaneous Fn key press to access the common Page Up/Page Down commands. The top row function keys are a little hard to read. Skype worked fine with no speaker or microphone problems if you use the built-in speaker and microphone in "speakerphone" mode. Not too much bloatware. Easy to remove the "D" partition using the built-in tool in Win7 control panel.

GREAT PRICING - getting the upgraded Bluetooth/250gb "package" add less to the base $300 price than other makers. If you get the base $300 model, which is probably more than adequate for most users, you still get a good 6 cell battery unlike the HP Mini 210 which comes with a wimpy 3 cell. Do note, however, that I believe that Asus's unusually high battery life rating is based on their SHE (super hybrid engine) utility program which allows you to slow down the processor, which gives Asus an edge over other makers who merely dim the screen. Some online reviewers, notably at engadget, run battery tests and they are worth Googling if maximum battery life is essential for you. For me, 3-4 hours of full screen brightness, "Performance mode" watching videos (which is very power demanding) is plenty, and other than 3 cell netbooks all of them will deliver this much performance,

So why the 4 star rating? Two reasons. Except for memory, it's not easy to access the hard drive (to upgrade) or the PCI-e mini slot (to add a video accelerator). For that matter, since I can't get the back panel off, I'm not even sure there IS an open PCI-e mini slot - HP, Dell, Acer include one, but I know MSI often doesn't, and I haven't hear anything about Asus. If these types of do-it-yourself upgrades are important, stick with Acer or HP instead.

BTW, Asus has announced two models which will include the Broadcom Crystal HD video accelerator card for stutter free 480p full screen video; Acer has announced a budget priced Ion2 video powered netbook (ao532g) which will do the same. So if high rez streaming video is a must, wait for one of those models in a month or two. (High rez converted video, played using Windows Media Player or VLC, is not a problem, and playing DVD's via an external drive is not a problem either, the new N450/GMA 3150 netbooks can do those easily - but you are limited to 480p in full screen mode due to screen resolution limitations).

Finally, toggle the SHE function (Fn + space bar) and run your Asus 1001p in Super High Performance mode for the best performance. It is noticeably zippier than other makers in this mode.

If you have any questions, please comment and I will answer if I can.

     "Great little netbook" 2010-03-03
By R. Davey (Ft. Lauderdale, FL USA)
I travel a lot and needed something to take with me for basically getting on the internet and storing pictures. With that in mind I bought the Asus. So far I have been very pleased with it. The only issue I have had with it and I am not sure yet if it is just because the keyboard is alittle smaller than the standard size or if there is an issue with the keys but when I am typing on the keyboard many times one of the key strokes does not register and I have to go back and retype a word. Besides that it is great. Also note that if you spend a lot of time watching videos this size of a laptop may not be the one for you. The screen just is not big enough to give much justice to a video.

     "Wonderful mini....I love it" 2010-03-22
    By M. Lazarre (Pittsburgh, PA)
This is one of the best purchases that I invested in this year. I'm a full time grad student and I also work full time. The mini allows me to work on the go at my convience. I throw it in my purse and keep going. Very light weight. Battery life is good. I didnt charge for 2 days and still was going strong. Of course it doesnt have a large memory so I back my info to my laptop. Overall its great.

     "Great Netbook" 2010-03-18
By J. Lambert (Hardinsburg, Indiana, US)
I shopped around looking for deals and at different models for about 2-3 months. Did lots of research on features and performance, and was overwhelmed at how man of these netbooks have the exact same internals as all the others. I finally went with the HP Mini 210-1055NR because it has the full glass over the entire screen and bezel that makes it look so much better than the 110 or similar dells. This just creates such a more aesthetically pleasing look to the entire netbook. It also had a little better specs than all the other clones that were budget priced all over the web (Acers, Dells, HP 110s) and with the extra RAM I bought for it, and the easy access panel that allows you to remove the entire bottom cover of the netbook, the upgrade was simple and performance is great!

I recommend this to anyone looking at getting a netbook for either easy writing or surfing. I haven't played with HPs linux instant on software that comes preinstalled, but Windows 7 starter works just fine, despite previously hearing bad things about its limitations, I with it and am happy I chose it over the severely outdated XP.

One thing that is crucial to do is remove as much of the bloatware that HP installs by default on their new systems. You will see a significant performance boost and less harddrive space taken up by clearing off all the trial games and software that come with your new HP.

     "Hugs HP Netbook" 2010-03-07
    By Granderobino (Minneapolis, MN USA)
I'm sorry I'm not able to offer a well-informed opinion as I am practically techno-illiterate. Really. Just a step above a Luddite.

But I needed something that I could actually consider portable (as opposed to my beloved laptop-which I love, but is just too bulky for me to throw in a bag and run). Anyhoo, after looking in a few stores and online and reading the various folks reviews of similar products here, I decided on this. And, Yay! It's everything I wanted. I can't vouch for how well it manages more complicated aplications but for me to just acess email when I'm away from home (because I have sausage fingers, and don't think I could manage IPhone use), and surf a few sites on the web, it's been great. The battery life is always more than enough. The set up was easy and use is easy. Easy for me = Win.

I got the sleeve they offerd her to go with it, and a small "Kensignton" wireless mouse (though the touch pad on this unit is easier to use than others I have tried, so I don't always need the mouse).

The unit arrived in a timely manner and was well protected in its pakaging.

"Warning About Windows 7 Starter" 2010-02-25
By M. Pavan (Bellingham, WA, USA)
I just wanted to warn others about a major drawback of the Windows 7 Starter Operating System that this netbook comes with. I wasn't aware of it when I made my purchase, and I wish I had been. Windows 7 Starter is a very scaled back version of Windows 7 that is only available pre-installed on netbooks. It it does not have full-featured functionality. It does not, for example, allow a user to change their desktop background. The stock blue Windows background it comes with is what you're stuck with, unless you use third-party workarounds. You also cannot change window colors or sound schemes. Additionally, it does not offer DVD playback. So, if you had planned on attaching a portable drive to watch movies--think again. I highly recommend doing your own research into the limitations of Windows 7 Starter before you buy, if you plan to use it as your primary operating system.

"Not what I expected from HP" 2010-02-24
    By Kathleen Tringo (MA)
Sorry but I can only give this mini laptop a one-star review. There are two things wrong with it. The second day I owned it I went to plug it in to recharge the battery only to find that the connection was loose and I had to wiggle the cord and actually prop the cord up on a stack of papers in order for it to stay in the computer. The second problem was the same thing with the ethernet cord. The ethernet cord would not plug in properly to the computer. I actually went to a store that carries the same laptop. He tried plugging in the ethernet cord for me only to find out that it would not snap in. He tried the HP mini they had in the store and the same thing happened. He was a little confused also. Then he took the cord and plugged it into an Acer, a Dell and a Toshiba and the cord snapped right into place but on this model of the HP mini the cords fell right out of the computer. I highly suggest just going to your local Best Buy, Staples or some place that carries the HP minis and trying it out for yourself before making the purchase on Amazon. If I had done that I could have saved myself a trip to purchase a different brand of computer while away from home. I have an HP 16" laptop and it works great that is why I thought the mini would be a perfect purchase.

     "Great for a Netbook" 2010-03-22
By T. Kay (Gillette, WY, USA)
Remember, a netbook isn't a notebook or a PC. It is for basic work, not for high end gaming, or media work. With that said, this netbook is great. The keyboard is comfortable (I usually use an ergonomic keyboard, so that says a lot). The screen is easy to read and only a couple older software packages didn't fix on the screen when I was testing. The boot up with 1 Gig of memory is a bit slow, I thought that it was because it was a netbook. Not so, I upgraded to the max 2 Gig, and wow, bootups and aplication loads are very fast. Earlier I said it isn't for high media work, that is correct, but it did run Adobe Premier and Photoshop Elements with 1 Gig of memory, though very slow. I didn't try with the 2 Gig of memory.

     "ASUS Netbook Eee PC" 2010-03-22
    By I. Rosado (Marietta, GA)
Like all other reviews I read prior to the purchase, needed the 2 Gb RAM for it to be up to par with bigger laptops, also had to load VLC Media to watch movies. I loaded Office 2007 and a few more software packages and it has behaved well so far. Sometimes though when I turn it on for it takes a long time for it to react, other times it comes up in moments, do not know why it does this. Hopefully it will not turn out to be a bigger problem in the future,

     "The Asus 1005HA-MU17-BU Netbook" 2010-03-20
By B. Browning (St. Louis Park, Minnesota, US)
I've owned the Asus for a about a month-and-a-half now, and have been very happy with it's performance and size. I did purchase a 2GB stick of RAM for it, which I would recommend, as well as a small carrying case to keep things neat. It has worked flawlessly to date. I remember reading someone's review indicating that it seemed to get overly warm with operation; I have not found that to be the case. Asus indicates the battery should run for 8.5 hours between charges, but I suspect under normal operation that might be a bit overly-optimistic. That being said, the battery does last quite a while before a re-charge is needed, and I like the fact that I can replace the battery myself if needed. It also runs very quietly and that's a plus. I'm running most of my desktop apps on this machine as well and have had no issues. I would highly recommend this netbook for consideration.

"Works with Linux out of the box" 2010-03-18
By Scott Robbins (New York, NY)
I never even booted Windows on this, (though from what I understand, Asus will not refund more than six dollars of the Microsoft Tax.)

Sound and wireless worked with Fedora, Ubuntu and ArchLinux. I also have an Asus 1000HE. This is a bit smaller and lighter.

I give it a 4, rather than a 5, for a few reasons, most of which have been stated in other reviews. It's a fingerprint magnet. The jack for the power cord seems very fragile. The touchpad, and its single bar, rather than a right and left click button, is a nuisance. In Linux at least, I can't use two finger scrolling. The touchpad is bumpy and there's a smooth area to the right that will work for one finger scrolling. Note that this is in Linux, I don't know how it works in Windows.

Other than that, it's a netbook. It's small, not that powerful, but fine for browsing, reading ebooks, skype (though probably better with headphones), documents and the like.

It's pretty similar to the 1000HE, with the upside of less size and weight, plus a better keyboard (full size right hand shift key this time), but with a flimsier connector from power cord to computer and that touch pad.

I remember years ago, the Gateway Arc 200 (an ultralight--but not a netbook, it was rather expensive at the time) had the middle mouse button as a little wheel on a bar above the touchpad. I've never seen it since, but for me, at least, it was the most convenient trackpad equivalent of a mouse button that I've used.

     "Awful item" 2010-03-16
By Pamela Austin (Indianapolis, IN United States)
Let me start off by stating I purchased an Asus netbook from a brick and mortar store a year before I bought two from Amazon. I purchased two netbooks 12-17-09 for my daughters at college to take up less room. The first one died within two days of Christmas. It was promptly returned. The second barley made it past Valentines day. I called customer service and will get a refund but because I bought this at a good AMAZON price I will not be able to replace at the same price. So now my daughter will be without a computer for the next 7-10 days. This is one time Amazon has let me down. I will definetly let all my friends and family know NOT to purchase a computer nor anyother type of electronics from Amazon, stick to books.
