"Great litte netbook, impressive touchscreen, great bettery" 2010-03-20
By Vikram Rajagopalan (Bethesda MD)
As soon as Steve Jobs specified what the iPad would be, I was disappointed, and realized that I needed something else to be my touch-screen computer of choice. I looked first at the Archos 9 PC tablet, but I realized that the touch screen was resistive, would not support multi-touch, and did not have a real keyboard, which was a large downside for schoolwork. After looking at CES, I found the Lenovo s10-3t
When I first put this netbook together, I was surprised by the size of the battery- it wasn't as large as people who reviewed it told me it was, but it definitely jetted out of the computer. Many argue that the keyboard is cheap, but I actually like the way it feels. Unlike most netbooks, It doesn't feel super-duper small in your hands. The track pad is ridiculously small compared to most other netbooks in its class. The two buttons are integrated into the touchpad, but it does not work like the Macbooks, where you can click anywhere on the track pad. When I plugged it in, the light on the lid of the netbook is not helpful. It does not indicate when the battery is full, and there is no way to check the level of charge without actively turning on the computer. IT was also difficult for me to disconnect the charger from the port on the computer. The netbook has two USB ports, a VGA port, which is useful for connecting to projectors, and an Ethernet port for wired access.
Turning on the computer, there were loads of bloatware, as Lenovo does not even let your load Windows without launching all of their software programs.
The touchscreen-
The multitouch capacitive screen works well. Turning the screen, rotating the hinge was pretty easy. However when moving around the laptop with the screen open (in laptop mode) the screen would fall flat backward. The hinge moved too easily. This began to concern me. I have not taken action to call Lenovo about this issue yet. Most of its capabilities are only available after upgrading to Windows 7 Home Premium. I found a copy of the Anytime Upgrade to Home Premium on EBay for 40 dollars, but otherwise the full cost of the product is 79.99. The upgrade process takes 10 minutes, and does not affect your files. Once the upgrade was installed, I was able to pinch, zoom, swipe, rotate and highlight almost any website or window. The raised bezel makes it difficult, however, to click in the corners. I had some trouble clicking the start button; every time I tried it would load something different from my taskbar. I fixed the issue by increasing the size of the taskbar, and moving the start button a little higher on the screen. However this limited my viewing space. In tablet mode, portrait was uncomfortable, there isn't much room to hold the tablet in this orientation, and although some argue the battery makes a nice handle, it gets in the way. I imagined I could hold the tablet in portrait mode to read eBooks, but the screen is almost too widescreen and the reading space I was left with were extremely narrow. When holding the tablet in landscape mode, Lenovo did a great job making it easy to hold, to prevent the accidental touch of the power button, they created a hold switch. This was nice for watching Hulu, or any video. I found myself loving Aero Snap- I would unmaximize my windows and center them so I could click the X button, closing programs. The Ribbon UI of the MS Office Suite worked great with the touchscreen, but some programs did not work as well.
Anyone who purchases this computer must remember that Windows 7 is a full desktop operating system with features that allow touch, and is not a trapped, compressed Apple-support-only operating system where all of the buttons and everything has been customized to the hardware.

As a netbook-
The netbook isn't slow. It isn't super-fast either, it's a netbook. The processor is pretty fast for an Atom, 1.66 GHz. When I opened Windows task manager with all of my usual programs open, I found that I was using 82% of my memory. I purchased 2GB of RAM on EBay for 30 dollars, and I found a significant difference in speed. Converting to tablet mode became much faster. Loading, minimizing, and all touchscreen functions became much more responsive.

I enabled the Quick Start in the BIOS settings, and enjoyed that functionality, it was speedy, but I kept the netbook on for most of the time, and never used it extensively.

OVERVIEW

PROS- Great, speedy netbook (with add-on), Quick start Feature, long lasting battery (14 hours, I was able to achieve) Responsive multitouch touchscreen, Wireless N, full size keyboard.

CONS- hinge moves too easily, tiny touchscreen, touchscreen loves fingerprints, horrible speakers ( tinny sound) have to pay extra for Windows Upgrade.

"Good system if you upgrade it" 2010-03-17
By Jesse Andersen
I bought this system for $500 and got the 1.66Ghz version with Windows Starter and 1GB RAM. The system is not that good with those specs. You have to upgrade certain elements and then this system reaches it's potential.

When you start it for the first time the system is quite slow because of lot's of processes running by default, not enough RAM, and you can't use the touch features because it has Windows 7 Starter Edition, also Lenovo Energy Management slows down the CPU on purpose to have longer battery life but it does make programs lag.

Follow some of these tips and improve the performance of your S10-3T:
Tip No. 1 - Upgrade RAM to 2GB
Tip No. 2 - Install a fresh copy of Windows 7 Home Premium, Pro or Ultimate
Tip No. 3 - Install only the drivers that you need and optimize Windows 7 visuals
Tip No. 4 - Tweak Lenovo Energy Management for faster CPU performance
Tip No. 5 - Use the right browser (Firefox + Grab and Drag plugin)

I have other tips in the works which you can view at:

Once the system is optimized you can do a lot of crazy things which can be quite impressive. You can view some of my videos about the Lenovo S10-3T at:

"A little heavy but worth it, take a little perf tuning to make it fly" 2010-03-15
By B. Wagoner
Well in short, I think this is a great tablet. If you've used netbooks in the past, then you already know not to expect them to perform like laptops, however, after a few modifications, my s10-3t is running great. You definitely need to upgrade to a version of windows beyond starter such as home premium or pro. I used ultimate since I had an extra key. The touch mechanisms in Windows 7 home and up are way better than the jerky slow lenovo stuff. Then you need to uninstall most of the junkware that comes with the lenovo like onetouch and stuff. make sure to keep the touch drivers though. I forgot what it's called but there's an icon in the system tray that'll tell you what that program is not to uninstall. Next you need to follow some of the tips presented here for optimizing windows 7 for a netbook. This is only for later editions and not the starter edition that comes with the netbook.

[...].

After I did all this ,my touch experience is much more like my Nexus one phone, very responsive and acts how I imagined. I think it was just a bad idea to use windows 7 starter on this netbook as Lenovo had to implement a lot of their own touch software(Which is slow and jerky) since Starter edition doesn't come with the real microsoft designed windows multitouch stuff. So upgrade, you'll be much happier. Windows 7 is surprisingly well enabled for multitouch.

If you are a firefox user, I also suggest this

[...]

I needed a stylus so I ordered an HTC stylus which is a lot like the DAGI capacitive touch styli. They are much firmer and have a much finer point on them then those pogo styli and others. HTC st c400

Once you get rid of most(but not all) of the lenovo stuff and upgrade windows and follow some of the tuning tips in this review, I think you'll be pretty happy with your purchase. Now I sit and read on the couch all the time and watch internet tv. A touch screen makes a huge difference in comfort when sitting around in awkward positions or reading in darkness when you can't see your regular keyboard. The onscreen keyboard in upgraded versions of windows 7 is multitouch enabled and is super responsive on this thing.

Oh, and the auto rotation works much better in upgraded versions of windows 7. it's accurate and quick like a phone.

And if you can afford it, go ahead and get another 1gb of memory.

A little background: I use this for business and I travel a great deal. I've had other netbooks like the acer 532h (which was also great for the price but no touchscreen)

"Good machine, but u should understand capacitive touch isn't good for handwriting" 2010-03-15
By D. Details
Very nice unit. I would recommend it - but buyer beware, capacitive touch screens are not high enough resolution and sensitivity for hand writing, so as a true 'tablet,' look for a resistive screen. Other issue I have is that the screen swivels both directions, which is great but it's important to be gentle in returning the screen from tablet to notebook position (or have a better memory than I to recall which direction you swiveled it to place it in tablet position in the first place!). I could imagine cracking the mount by just a little force in the wrong direction.

 "Heavy, but.....sexy and complex" 2010-03-12
By ro
I wish there was a six star category! This is a wonderful netbook. Sexy, deep, mysterious,
nice feelings and easy to hold, really tight and loving. Very complex, like a woman, but
delicate, like a man. It will keep your interest on any business trip.

If you need a small portable netpad to do work on and easily portable, BUY THIS!
If you need a small portable netpad to play on, buy the iPad.

Or buy both.... for work and play, you won't go wrong.
